Hello Parents and Students!
I am so thankful for some sunshine this weekend and today! Crossing my fingers it stays around.
Reading: We are really enjoying reading Turn Homeward, Hannalee. This novel is based in Roswell, GA during the Civil War. Students are making lots of connections to places we know such as Kennesaw Mountain and Vickory Creek near the Roswell Mill. We are using this novel to discuss the setting, events that cause different points of view, and also dig into the different character's feelings and traits. This week our focus is THEME. We will use the skills we learn in our mini lessons and apply them to the book club books we are reading and in our silent reading books too!
Writing: This week we will be working on continuing a narrative writing piece using conflict, events, descriptions, and dialogue, We are aiming to create 3 body paragraphs and an introduction and conclusion. Your child has a note packet in the ELA tab of their binder.
Grammar: Last week we dug into action and helping verbs. This week our focus will be on LINKING VERBS. Your child will receive a notes packet on this skill as well. These notes can be found in the ELA tab of their binders.

Ask your child about...
- What is the difference between an action, helping, and linking verb? Can you give me an example?
- Where is your Unit 5 homework choice board? Let's work on some boxes! :)
- Show me your Narrative Writing notes. Why is it important to include dialogue, description and a conflict in a narrative writing piece?
- What is a possible theme in Turn Homeward, Hannalee? What is a possible theme in your book club book or independent reading book?
- What's in the reading tab of their binder? ELA tab?
Announcements:
- If you have a dismissal change/absence please contact the front office. With the break coming soon, I know there may be students having to leave town early. Be sure to keep the front office in the loop!
- Check agendas, Google Classroom, and our homework website for practice opportunities for Unit 5! A hard copy of the practice choice board will be handed out to your child this week.
- NO SCHOOL on Friday, March 13th!
- Please be sure to remind your students the importance of washing their hands, coughing in their elbows, and blowing their nose in a tissue. Every day after school I try and disinfect the classroom as much as possible, and I am trying to remind students to wash their hands during the most crucial parts of their day. Thank you for your help!
- Coach Digital: Now that we are in the 2nd semester of school, many of you have asked about how you can help your child prepare for the upcoming the Georgia Milestones Assessment. Our AMAZING Dolvin Foundation purchased the rights to the Coach Digital, an electronic platform for all our students to access from home and school in order to prepare for the assessment. To access the platform, please go to www.coachdigital.com. Once there, select Georgia for the first drop down, Fulton County for the second drop down, and Dolvin Elementary for the third drop down. Your child's username is their 10-digit lunch number (which they know) and the password is 123456.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a fabulous week!
