I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and had the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine!
Topics:
- ELA: Students are working on typing their Narrative Essay Final Drafts in Google Classroom. Your children have been working really hard on making this their best work and I am so proud of them. This essay will be taken as a Summative Grade (Test) in ELA.
- On Friday, we will have a Grammar Test on dialogue, commas, and quotation marks. If your child is learning 5th grade curriculum, their test will also cover perfect tense verbs. Check your child's ELA tab of their binder for notes and also their Google Classroom account for some review activities. This test will be taken paper/pencil.
- As we are nearing the end of our narrative unit, we will also begin Unit 2 this week on informational writing. We will begin brainstorming a topic by integrating science! This unit we will be using the science text as a resource for reading and writing!
- Reading: We have completed our read aloud on Tiger Rising. Students LOVED this novel and it was a great way to enforce the skills we learned in Unit 1.
- Just like in ELA, we are moving on to Unit 2 which is focusing on reading a Non-Fiction text. This week, we will be digging in to the student's science text to find text features and text structures. This year we will focus on the text structures description, cause and effect, problem and solution, sequence/chronological order, and compare and contrast. We will be teaching these concepts in class and then using the science text to reinforce these skills.
- This week we will also be completing our first Cold Read Assessment. Students can choose to take this on Monday or Wednesday. The Cold Read will be based on reading two texts and answering questions to check for comprehension. This will be taken on Google Classroom.
- We are creating goals and meeting in Book Clubs. If your child would like to purchase their own copy of their book club book so they don't have to share, that is AWESOME! Ask your child about what book they are reading!
- I would highly recommend logging on to your child's iReady to track their progress. In the beginning of the year, it is my goal to have students work on this program 30-45 minutes a week. If they would like to work on this at home to achieve this goal, they certainly can. As you will see, it is a "homework option" for unit one and it is a very individualized program. Students have started logging their progress to make goals and reflect on their learning. You can find this in the reading tab of their binders.
Ask your child about...
- What do they remember about Informational Writing last year?
- What does the word "genre" mean?
- Let them show you how they log on to iReady, Google Classroom, Seesaw
- What's in their agenda? binder?
Reminders:
- If you have a dismissal change/absence please contact the front office.
- Check agendas and the homework website for practice opportunities for Unit 2! Remember, Dolvin's policy is to not collect homework as a grade this year as it should be used for reinforcing skills!
- By popular request, I will be printing out the Unit 2 homework choice boards for each student. Please have your child keep this in a safe spot in their binders or at home. The choice board will still be posted on our homework website as well. Since this is an informational unit, the reading teachers did our best to integrate the science and social studies topics. I hope this will help your child in both AM and PM classes!
- Sign and Return papers went home on Thursday! Be sure your child reflects on their grades and learning on the cover page before turning this in. This is a great time for you to have a conversation with your child about their personal growth thus far in 4th grade!
- Conference sign ups went out last week via email! Slots are limited as I would LOVE to meet with students in both AM and PM. This is 57 children! Please be patient with me in organizing a time slot and please let me know if you did not get a chance to sign up and I will create a new slot for you.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a fabulous week!
