I hope you enjoyed your weekend! LAST week before WINTER BREAK!
Here is the update for the week:
Topics:
- ELA: Last week finished our rough drafts and began the revising and editing process using the opinion writing checklist. Ask your child to show you the "moves" we have for remembering each part of the Opinion Essay. Some students have started typing their essays on Google Classroom. Feel free to look under "Unit Three" of your child's google classroom account to see their writing checklist!
- For grammar, we have been learning about prepositions. Look for notes in the ELA tab of your child's binder!
- Reading: We have been discussing the qualities of a prose, poem, and drama. We have also been learning about specific figurative language examples used in literature (similes, metaphors, proverbs & adages, idioms) as well as synonyms and antonyms. Last week we completed an "Escape the Room" to review the concepts learned in Unit 3. Look in your child's binder for notes under the reading tab! There will be a test on Unit 3-- drama, poetry, prose, theme, character's, events, figurative language, and point of view (1st and 3rd Person) on Tuesday!
- This week, I will complete giving child the BAS assessment to all students. We completed this reading assessment at the beginning of the year. I am using this tool to track your child's progress and inform them of their new lexile range. While I am meeting with each child, the other students are creating goals and meeting in Book Clubs.
Ask your child about...
- How many iReady lessons have you passed this week?
- What are some examples of similes, metaphors, idioms, adages & proverbs?
- What is are the major differences between poetry, drama, and prose?
- Why would an author use figurative language in their writing piece?
- Tell me about the Escape the Room you completed on Friday! Do you have the pages in your binder? Can you show me?
- How is your opinion essay coming along? What are the three reasons for your big idea? Are you using transitions words? Are you following the Opinion Checklist?
- What's in the reading tab of their binder? ELA tab?
Reminders:
- If you have a dismissal change/absence please contact the front office. With the break coming soon, I know there may be students having to leave town early. Be sure to keep the front office in the loop!
- Check agendas, Google Classroom, and our homework website for practice opportunities for Unit 3! A hard copy of the practice choice board was handed out at the beginning of the unit.
- Reading Test this week (Tuesday, 12/17) on Google Classroom
- AM Class Winter Parties: 12/20!
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a fabulous week!
