I have really enjoyed getting to sit down and conference with you discussing your child's progress so far this year. Thank you for taking the time to come chat with me!
Here is the update for the week:
Topics:
- ELA: This week we will continue to develop our body paragraphs on our informational topic. Each child has chosen three big ideas to write about and have been working hard to write their rough drafts. We will also learn how to write a conclusion and begin the editing and revising process.
- Students will learn about compound sentences and where to add a comma. There is a notes page in the ELA tab of their binder.
- If your child is learning 5th grade curriculum, they will learn how to use commas in a series and how to use commas in an introductory element of a sentence. There is a notes page in the ELA tab of their binder.
- Reading: This week we will focus on main idea & details and summarizing a nonfiction text. We started learning about these topics last week. You can find a notes packet in the reading tab of you child's binder.
- We will also continue to discuss the five nonfiction text structures (description, cause and effect, problem and solution, sequence/chronological order, and compare and contrast.) There are notes pages in the reading tab of your child's binder.
- We will have a QUIZ on the the concepts learned so far in Unit 2 on FRIDAY. This will be used as a "check in" to see where students are in terms of understanding the concepts. Students will have to read passages and decide what text structure is being used. They will also have to identify the main idea and details to support it. Students will be asked to write a summary based on what they read.
- We are creating goals and meeting in Book Clubs. If your child would like to purchase their own copy of their book club book so they don't have to share, that is AWESOME! Ask your child about what book they are reading and what they have read so far!
Ask your child about...
- What three big ideas are you writing about for your informational essay?
- Why is it important to revise and edit your work?
- How are main idea & details similar to a summary? How are they connected?
- Where does the comma go in a compound sentence? Where do the commas go when listing items in a series?
- What's in the reading tab of their binder? ELA tab?
Reminders:
- If you have a dismissal change/absence please contact the front office.
- Check agendas and the homework website for practice opportunities for Unit 2! A hard copy of the practice choice board was handed out last week.
- Spelling Bee: Each AM class will have a class spelling bee. Students that wish to participate were handed out words to study. We will have our class Spelling Bee on Friday, November 11th. The winner and runner up will compete in our school wide spelling bee!
